PathwAI's Persona integration verifies a respondent's government-issued ID inside a flow. The ID Verification step opens a Persona inquiry over the flow, prefilled with the name, date of birth, email, phone and address already collected, and runs the checks your Persona template defines. The step moves on only after a completed verification. In Production, PathwAI confirms each result on the server with your Persona API key.
What data moves
- PathwAI to Persona: the template ID, an optional reference ID and, with Prefill from profile on, the respondent's name, date of birth, email, phone and address.
- Respondent to Persona: ID photos and any other checks in your template, inside Persona's window.
- Persona to PathwAI: the inquiry ID and status. On success, the verified identity fields are written to the respondent's profile with the inquiry ID and the time of verification.
Where it is configured
Integrations → Persona holds the workspace API key; the ID Verification step also has a Connect button for it. Each step sets the Persona template ID, the environment and an optional reference ID.
Use cases
Identity before clinical review or checkout
Place the step before payment or before the intake goes to a clinician, so only verified people reach those steps.
No repeat checks for returning patients
A respondent whose profile already holds a completed verification, for the same reference ID when one is set, sees the verified card and moves on.
Verified details downstream
Verified name, birth date and address fill the profile, so later steps and webhooks use them.
How to set it up
- In Persona, choose the inquiry template to run and copy its ID, which starts with itmpl_, and your API key.
- In PathwAI, open Integrations → Persona and paste the key.
- Add an ID Verification step, keep Persona as the provider and paste the template ID.
- Optionally set a Reference ID with a variable. Collect name, date of birth and email earlier so prefill has data.
- Test in Sandbox, then switch the step to Production before publishing.
Good to know
- Outside Production the step shows a Skip (mock verified) link for testing, so switch to Production before going live.
- If verification fails or expires, the respondent sees Verification Not Completed and a Try Again button.

Can a respondent skip the ID check?
Not in Production. The step only moves on after a completed verification. The mock skip link appears only outside Production.
What is saved on the submission?
A verification record: the Persona inquiry ID, its status, the reference ID if set and, on success, the identity fields Persona returned.
Which provider does the ID Verification step use?
Persona. Plaid also appears in the provider list, marked as coming soon.
